The Hobbit in the 2020s

The 2020s have seen a great surge of interest in JRR Tolkien’s work, driven, in part, by the Amazon Rings of Power TV series. This has been reflected in the large number of new audio productions seen in the first half of the decade alone.

  • 2020 Hobitas (Audioteka) Jokūbas Bareikis’s reading arrived just as the global pandemic led to a massive surge in audiobook consumption in Lithuania.
  • 2020 The Hobbitathon (Independent) Andy Serkis’s marathon continuous reading for charity.
  • 2020 The Hobbit (HarperCollins) The first new commercial reading in English for nearly 30 years. Andy Serkis, this time recorded in digital high-quality.
  • 2021 Anh Chàng Hobbit (Independent) Rin Mabuxa gives what is believed to be a fan project for Vietnamese listeners.
  • 2022 El Hòbbit (Penguin Random House) Jordi Boixaderas gives the first of four Spanish dialect readings, this one is Catalan.
  • 2023 Hobit (Slušalište) Independent Bosnian fan reading.
  • 2023 Hobit (Slovart Publishing House) Dušan Cinkota gives an animated, distinct and textured performance for Slovakian listeners.
  • 2023 El Hobbit (Audible Studios y Planeta Audio) Javier Gutiérrez gives the second of four Spanish dialect readings, this one is Castilian.
  • 2023 El Hobbit (Audible Studios y Planeta Audio) Miguel Angel Jenner gives the third of four Spanish dialect readings, this one is ‘regular’ Spanish.
  • 2024 El Hobbit (Planeta Audio) Jorge Cabrera gives the fourth of four Spanish dialect readings, this one is Latinoamérican Spanish.
  • 2025 Lo Hobbit (Bompiani) Riccardo Ricobello didn’t just read the book in Italian; he suggested several corrections and improvements for the printed text.
  • 2025 Hobbit (İthaki Yayınları) Oğuz Yanık handles Tolkien’s complex nomenclature within the rules of Turkish vowel harmony.
