The Hobbit in the 1990s

The 1990s saw a resurgence of interest with lots of new readings, including the seminal Rob Inglis unabridged reading, Michael Horden’s radio broadcast and the wildly creative, eccentric Danish production by Rune T Kidde.

  • 1990 Hobitti eli sinne ja takaisin (WSOY) This production brought the new translation to Finnish listeners.
  • 1991 Rob Inglis (Recorded Books) For nearly 30 years the only unabridged, commercially available, reading in English.
  • 1992 Hobbin (The Faroese Audiobook Committee) Read by the translator.
  • 1992 Michael Hordern (BBC Radio 5) Brian Sibley abridged reading while Michael Hordern was in the studio for The Tales from the Perilous Realm.
  • 1993 Martin Shaw (HarperCollins) Abridged reading in his deep, rich tones.
  • 1995 Hobbiten (Cappelen Damm) Knut Røe’s Norwegian (Bokmål) reading.
  • 1996 Hobit (Český rozhlas 2) A popular piece of Czech radio history
  • 1999 Hobbitten (Børneradio) Rune T Kidde’s remarkable contribution to Danish radio history.
