Because Leaf by Niggle is a short story, it was rarely sold alone in the physical era. It has been repackaged multiple times. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, HarperCollins paired Leaf by Niggle with Smith of Wootton Major (also read by Jacobi) to create a standard-length audio product. It then appeared as part of two boxed set collections; The Tolkien Treasury and HarperCollins’ version of Tales from the Perilous Realm. With the rise of digital streaming, HarperCollins decoupled the stories to sell them individually.

Depending on which release you listen to, the music differs. The 1990s/early 2000s versions often featured light, synthesized medieval-style melodies common to the Collins Audio brand of the time. The 2016 digital standalone is usually “clean,” featuring only Jacobi’s voice with minimal or no musical interludes.
