The recording of Der Fall von Gondolin (The Fall of Gondolin), released in February 2025, is the final piece of the “Great Tales” trilogy for the German audio market. This production reunites the now-iconic duo of Gert Heidenreich (see profile page) and Timmo Niesner to conclude the First Age narratives edited by Christopher Tolkien. Following the successful blueprint of Beren und Lúthien and Nachrichten aus Mittelerde, this recording utilizes the distinct vocal registers of the two narrators to help listeners navigate the “Evolution of a Legend” format.
Gert Heidenreich (The Chronological Guide): Heidenreich (see profile page) handles the editorial commentary and introductions written by Christopher Tolkien. Because this book is about the process of writing (showing the story’s transformation from the “Lost Tales” version to the final Silmarillion fragments), Heidenreich’s authoritative, warm baritone acts as the scholarly compass.
Timmo Niesner (The Mythic Voice): Niesner performs the actual story fragments. He reads the earliest, highly detailed version of the battle. This is the longest continuous narrative in the book, and his reading captures the visceral, proto-epic energy of Tolkien’s first major Middle-earth story.
Timmo Niesner, born in 1971, had his breakthrough at the age of 12 in the television series “Ich heirate eine Familie” (I’m Marrying a Family). He has also worked extensively as a voice actor most notably as the German dubbing voice of Elijah Wood. Other works include roles in ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, Danish Girl, The Theory of Everything, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond.
They had previously worked together on Nachrichten aus Mittelerde (Unfinished Tales), Beren und Lúthien (Beren and Lúthien) and Der Untergang von Númenor (The Fall of Númenor).
