This was commissioned by the publisher WSOY to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Finnish translation and to provide a modern, high-fidelity alternative to the classic 1990s recordings. Read by Toni Kamula, replacing the 1992-1993 recording of Heikki Määttänen. An illustrated edition was published in September 2023, which included a revised translation by Kersti Juva. In December this new reading was released.

This uses the revised and checked translation (tarkistettu suomennos). To mark 50 years of the Finnish edition, original translator Kersti Juva meticulously went through the entire text to correct minor errors and refine the language. This version ensures that all names and locations (like Kontu for the Shire and Reppuli for Baggins) are presented in their most polished and consistent form. The poems and songs, which are a hallmark of the Finnish translation (originally translated by Panu Pekkanen), are handled with great care in Kamula’s reading.

Toni Kamula (1978) is a Finnish Helsinki based director-actor and a film photography enthusiast with a background in media arts. He’s born in Kempele by the Gulf of Bothnia.

As an actor he has worked on screen in both television and film productions, theatre (ie. The Finnish National Theatre, Helsinki City Theatre and Lahti City Theatre). As a voice talent he has worked in audio dramas, animated TV series, commercials, and various voice-over projects. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks in Finnish.

As a director his works include short films and audio dramas. His short films have been selected to several Film Festivals as an Official Selection around the world. He teaches directing, narrating and coaches professionals in the audiobook publishing industry. He has narrated Silmarillion, Númenorin Tuho (Fall of Númenor), Húrinin lasten tarina (The Children of Hurin), Taru Sormusten Herrasta (The Lord of the Rings), Keskeneräisten tarujen kirja (Unfinished Tales).
