Joachim “Achim” Höppner, after training as an actor and studying German, art history, and theatre history, worked as an actor and director. For many years, he worked successfully in film, radio, and television, primarily in dubbing, radio plays, readings, and radio features. Sadly, after reading the first volume, he passed away in November 2006.
Gert Heidenreich, born in Eberswalde in 1944, studied old and new German literature, theatre studies, sociology, and philosophy in Munich. Between 1967 and 1983, he worked as a playwright and journalist, primarily for radio stations, for Die Zeit, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Since 1970, he has reported on his travels in Africa. Since 1972, he has also worked as a narrator for radio, television, and audiobook publishers. Heidenreich is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the German PEN Center. He stepped in to record volumes two and three, replacing the late Achim Höppner.
The production was directed by Angela Kuhn and the technical control was by Christoph Panizza from the Giesing Team, Munich.
The limited deluxe edition of Der Herr der Ringe comes on 7 golden mp3s, with a 300-page booklet and additional code for the limited download of the complete reading. The booklet contains illustrations by John Howe, all the appendices and maps of Middle-earth.
Additionally there is a bonus CD containing a pronunciation guide to the Elvish languages and the names of the peoples of Middle-earth read by Timmo Niesner.
Marcel Büllen and Gernot Katzer of the German Tolkien Society helped compile the information in the booklet and ensure the correct pronunciation of the names in the text.
