Heikki Määttänen worked for the Yleisradio (Finnish Broadcasting Company) Radioteatteri from 1982 until his death. He had a long career in radio, film and television. This background in radio drama is evident in his reading and he was known for a “slow, clear, and warm” delivery. Määttänen’s recording uses the classic translation by Kersti Juva and Eila Pennanen, with poems by Panu Pekkanen.
The recording is strictly unabridged. It includes every poem and song, which Määttänen reads with a rhythmic, almost chant-like quality that respects the Finnish Kalevala influence that Tolkien himself admired.
Taru Sormusten Herrasta was recorded 1991-1992 and published in 1992–1993 by WSOY as a six-volume audiobook, each volume containing 12 cassettes and in 2002–2003 as a three-volume CD version, each volume containing 20 CDs in two cases.
The illustrated edition, which was published in September 2023, also includes a revised translation by Kersti Juva. A new production was comissioned and published in December 2023, read by Toni Kamula.
