HarperCollins (having acquired the rights to the Caedmon Tolkien archives) undertook a significant remastering project to clean up the 1952 Malvern recordings’ tape hiss and the pops of the 1970s master tapes – ie all of the material previously released separately and then together in 1977 JRR Tolkien Soundbook / Collection.
This release was timed to coincide with the global excitement for Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). The set included a new, revised booklet with updated notes on the 1952 Malvern sessions, clarifying the George Sayer history for a new generation. While the content is the same as the Soundbook, the track indexing on the CD version is much more granular.
