Michael Hordern, having played Gandalf in the 1981 BBC Radio Lord of the Rings, returned to the studio in 1991 for two more Tolkien-related productions to be released in 1992. In Tales From the Perilous Realm, he plays Tolkien as narrator of the four stories. Whilst available in the studio, he also recorded an abridged reading of The Hobbit. Both of these productions were by Brian Sibley.

Broadcast in 15 approximately 12 minute instalments. It was first broadcast in 1992 on BBC Radio 5 and later repeated on BBC Radio4 in 1997. It has never been made available commercially but off-air recordings are in circulation with collectors.
