Attila Kaszás was a prolific actor who’s career spanned theatre, film, and music. His 2006 recording of A hobbit was completed just months before his untimely death. Born on March 16, 1960, in Šaľa (Vágsellye), which was then in Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), he grew up in an ethnic Hungarian family.
As well as a highly successful career on the stage with Vígszínház and the National theatre, he appeared in over 50 films and television productions, including Hídember (The Bridgeman), Üvegtigris, and the surreal Hukkle.
In 2008, the Kaszás Attila Award was established to honour actors who, like him, demonstrate not only extraordinary talent but also a deep sense of community and humanity within their theatre troupes. It remains one of the most respected honours in Hungarian acting today.
The recording of A Hobbit was a joint production between Kossuth Kiadó and Mojzer Kiadó. Directed by György Magos with József Brindzik as sound engineer. Initially released in 2006 on MP3-CDs and in November 2019 the publishers (Kossuth and Mojzer) remastered the 2006 audio to meet modern digital standards.
The recording uses the classic Hungarian translation by Tibor Szobotka which uses long-established Hungarian localizations, such as Zsákos Bilbó (Bilbo Baggins) and Zsáklak (Bag End).
